Shark fishering was very popular in Westman island in the nineteenth century. Called 'Shark touring " by the islanders the golden age of shark fishing was during the years 1860 - 1888 and were conducted in open vessels. Árneshreppur in the Strandir is the northernmost main administrative division of Strandasýsla and inhabitants practiced agriculture and fishing interchangeably.
